Estimated Native Range
Summary
Calamagrostis stricta, commonly known as Slim-stem Small Reed Grass or Narrow Small-reed, is a perennial bunchgrass native to a variety of wetland habitats including marshes, fens, wet meadows, and riverbanks across Eurasia and North America. It typically grows to a height of 12-39 inches (30-100 cm), with a clumping habit that does not spread widely. The plant features erect culms and flat, stiff leaf blades that contribute to its upright form. During the flowering season, which occurs in mid-summer, it produces lanceolate panicles with scabrous branches and solitary spikelets. The flowers are not particularly showy but are valued for their contribution to the texture and movement in the landscape.
Slim-stem Small Reed Grass is appreciated for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often utilized in ecological restoration projects for soil stabilization and habitat creation. It is also used in rain gardens and as a naturalistic planting in water garden settings. This grass prefers consistently moist to wet soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from clay to loam. It is best grown in full sun to part shade. While generally low-maintenance, it may require division every few years to maintain vigor. There are no major pest or disease problems associated with Calamagrostis stricta, but it can become less vigorous in dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
