Summary
Callistemon brachyandrus, commonly known as Prickly Bottlebrush, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, forest edges, and riparian zones in Southeastern Australia. It typically grows to a height of 1.5–8 m (5–26 ft) and has a rigid habit with hard bark. The narrow leaves are complemented by the distinctive cylindrical flower spikes, which are composed of numerous individual flowers with prominent red stamens and green bases, giving the appearance of a bottlebrush. These flowers are particularly showy and attract a variety of pollinators, including birds and insects. Flowering occurs mainly in spring and early summer, but sporadic blooms can appear throughout the year.
Prickly Bottlebrush is valued for its striking flowers and ability to attract wildlife, making it a popular choice for ornamental plantings in temperate regions. It is often used in urban landscaping, as a specimen plant, or for screening purposes. This species is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained, and it thrives in full sun. While it can tolerate low water conditions once established, moderate watering will encourage more prolific blooming. Prickly Bottlebrush is relatively low maintenance but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is also prone to scale insects and sooty mold.CC BY-SA 4.0
