Estimated Native Range
Summary
Calochortus coeruleus, commonly known as Blue Globe Lily, is a bulbous perennial herb native to the grasslands, open woodlands, and chaparral of the North California Coast Ranges, Southern Cascade Range, and Northern Sierra Nevada. It typically grows to a height of 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 centimeters). The plant features distinctive light purple to blue flowers with spade-shaped petals covered in brushlike hairs, which bloom from late spring to early summer. The flowers are quite showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Blue Globe Lily is valued for its unique color and texture in native plant gardens and is particularly well-suited to rock gardens and wildflower meadows. It requires well-drained soils and is drought-tolerant once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners in its native region. While it thrives in full sun to partial shade, it prefers a period of dry dormancy in the summer after flowering. There are no widely known cultivars of this species, but its natural beauty makes it a standout in cultivation. Gardeners should be aware that it can be sensitive to overwatering and may be susceptible to bulb rot if drainage is poor.CC BY-SA 4.0
