Summary

Calochortus leichtlinii, commonly known as Leichtlin’s mariposa lily, is a perennial herb native to the high elevation meadows, open woodlands, and rocky slopes of the Sierra Nevada and Modoc Plateau in California, as well as adjacent regions of the Great Basin in southeastern Oregon and western Nevada. It typically grows to a height of up to 24 inches (61 cm) and is noted for its erect stem and a loose cluster of 1 to 5 nodding, bell-shaped flowers. The flowers bloom from late spring to early summer and exhibit a range of colors, including white, pinkish, or dull blue petals that are often spotted with yellow and dark red or black, adding to their ornamental appeal.

Leichtlin’s mariposa lily is valued for its unique and showy flowers, which can be a striking addition to rock gardens, native plant gardens, and wildflower meadows. It requires well-drained soils and is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. It thrives in full sun to light shade conditions. While not commonly used for culinary purposes today, the small underground bulbs were historically consumed by Native Americans. Gardeners should be aware that the plant can be susceptible to bulb rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
