Calochortus splendens, commonly known as Splendid Mariposa Lily, is a perennial herb native to the coastal mountains and valleys of California and Baja California, where it thrives in a variety of habitats including chaparral, open woodlands, and grassy slopes. It typically grows to a height of up to 24 inches (60 cm) and features slender, upright stems topped with large, showy, bowl-shaped flowers. The blooms are predominantly lavender or purple, often with a darker base and a trio of broad petals, appearing in late spring to early summer. The flowers are not only visually striking but also serve to attract a variety of pollinators.

Splendid Mariposa Lily is valued for its ornamental flowers and is used in wildflower gardens, native plant landscapes, and as a naturalizing element in informal settings. It prefers full sun to light shade and requires well-drained soils, ideally mimicking its native rocky or sandy substrates. While drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.
