Summary

Camellia hongkongensis, commonly known as Hong Kong Camellia, is an evergreen tree that is native to Hong Kong and adjacent regions of Southern China. It typically grows to a modest height of up to 10 meters (33 feet), featuring a dense, rounded crown. This species is unique among Hong Kong’s native camellias for its striking red flowers, which bloom in late winter to early spring, adding a splash of color to the garden when few other plants are in flower. The young branches exhibit a reddish-brown hue, while the mature bark is gray and can become somewhat rough with age. The foliage consists of leathery, oblong leaves that are 7–13 cm in length, with a glossy, dark green upper surface and a paler underside.

Hong Kong Camellia is valued for its ornamental red flowers and glossy evergreen foliage, making it a desirable addition to shaded garden areas, woodland plantings, and as a specimen tree in Asian-themed gardens. It requires protection from direct afternoon sun and prefers consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to camellia petal blight and should be monitored for scale insects and spider mites. Regular mulching can help maintain soil moisture and temperature, benefiting overall plant health.CC BY-SA 4.0
