Summary

Camellia reticulata, commonly known as Yunnan Camellia, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the forests of South-Central China, particularly in Yunnan Province. It can reach a height of 10 to 15 meters (33 to 49 ft) and is known for its open, irregular branching structure. The Yunnan Camellia boasts large, showy flowers that are 7–10 centimeters (2.8–3.9 in) in diameter, with some cultivars producing even larger blooms. The flowers range in color from soft-pink to deep-pink and occasionally almost white. They typically have 5–7 petals, though some cultivars may have more, and are produced in sub-terminal or axillary positions on the branches. The blooming season is notably late, occurring from March through May in the northern hemisphere and August through October in the southern hemisphere, providing a splash of color when few other plants are in flower.

The Yunnan Camellia is valued for its stunning, large flowers and is often used in ornamental plantings, as a specimen plant, or for creating hedges and screens. It is also popular for bonsai due to its attractive form and flowering habit. While it is susceptible to cold weather, it can be grown successfully in regions with mild winters, provided it is sheltered from harsh conditions. In cultivation, it prefers part shade, though it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It requires medium amounts of water and thrives in acidic, well-drained soils. Gardeners should be aware that Camellia reticulata can be prone to pests such as scale insects and camellia petal blight, which can affect the appearance of the flowers and overall plant health.CC BY-SA 4.0
