Estimated Native Range
Summary
Campanula americana, commonly known as American Bellflower, is an annual herb native to moist meadows, woodlands, and forest edges in the Eastern and Central United States. It can reach an overall height of 3-6 feet, with a large central flower stem rising from a basal rosette, culminating in a raceme 1/2-2 feet long. The flowers of the Tall Bellflower are distinctive for their flat shape, light blue to violet color, and a pale white ring at the throat, each approximately 1 inch across. They bloom primarily in July and August and are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.
The American Bellflower is valued for its vertical accent in garden design and its charming flowers that add a splash of color in mid to late summer. It is suitable for wildflower gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it is adaptable to various light conditions and requires medium amounts of water and well-drained soil. It is relatively low maintenance but may require staking due to its height. There are no significant disease problems; however, it can self-seed prolifically under optimal conditions, which may be undesirable in some settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
