Summary
Campyloneurum costatum, commonly known as Tailed Strapfern, is an evergreen perennial herb that thrives in the humid understory of tropical rainforests and cloud forests in the Neotropics, including regions of Central and South America, as well as Florida and the Caribbean. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), featuring elongated, strap-like fronds that can add a textural contrast to garden compositions. The fronds are deep green, and while the plant does not produce showy flowers, its foliage is highly valued for its lush, verdant appearance.
Tailed Strapfern is appreciated for its ability to bring a tropical feel to shaded garden areas and is often used in cultivation as an understory plant in woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as a ground cover in humid, shady spots. It requires consistently moist soil and high humidity to thrive, mimicking its native rainforest habitat. It is best grown in part shade to full shade and benefits from soils with good organic content and medium drainage. While it is not known for significant pest or disease issues, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. This fern is not typically invasive but should be monitored to ensure it does not spread beyond its desired area in the garden.CC BY-SA 4.0
