Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex albula, commonly known as White Sedge, is an evergreen perennial grass native to the wetland areas of Southern New Zealand, including marshes and bogs. It typically grows to a height of 250 to 350 mm, forming dense tufts. The foliage may exhibit a range of colors from buff to an almost bleached white, and sometimes green or red hues. The smooth culms measure 50-200 mm by 0.5 mm and often feature a deep groove. Leaves are numerous, and the basal sheaths are a distinctive dark brown to purple-red. White Sedge is characterized by its inflorescence, with a terminal male spike and lateral female spikes. It flowers from October to December, with fruiting occurring from October to September. The nuts produced are adapted for dispersal by granivory and wind.
White Sedge is valued for its unique foliage color and texture, making it a striking addition to ornamental gardens, especially in water features or as a ground cover. It is also used in restoration projects for wetland habitats. This sedge is relatively easy to maintain, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in full sun to part shade. It is adaptable to a range of soil drainage conditions, from slow to fast. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
