Summary
Carex capillaris, commonly known as Hair-like Sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a variety of habitats including moist meadows, grasslands, and alpine regions in North America and northern Eurasia, including Greenland. It is often found in calcareous soils and can be a component of wetland fringes. This sedge typically forms dense tufts and reaches a modest height of 10-20 cm. Its narrow, hair-like leaves are characteristic, and it produces small, inconspicuous greenish-brown flowers from late spring to midsummer. The plant’s inflorescences are not particularly showy, but they do provide subtle texture to the landscape.
Hair-like Sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in challenging environments and is often used in restoration projects, especially in wetland and riparian areas. It is also suitable for ornamental use in water gardens or as part of a native plant garden. Carex capillaris prefers consistently moist soils and can tolerate partial shade to full sun conditions. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to rust and other fungal diseases, especially when grown in conditions that are too dry. This sedge is not typically aggressive but can spread through seed dispersal.CC BY-SA 4.0
