Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex cusickii, commonly known as Cusick’s sedge, is a perennial herb native to the moist meadows, wetlands, and riparian zones of Northwestern North America, including British Columbia, California, and Utah. It is particularly associated with the Cascade Range and areas west. This sedge forms dense clumps that can reach up to 4 feet in height. It is occasionally dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. The foliage is characterized by long, arching leaves with sheaths that are uniquely marked with red and edged with copper tones. The inflorescence is composed of distinct bunches of spikelets that add textural interest to the plant’s appearance.
Cusick’s sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in restoration projects, rain gardens, and naturalized areas where it can provide erosion control and habitat for wildlife. It requires consistently moist soil and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is not typically known for its ornamental qualities, the unique coloration of its leaf sheaths can provide subtle aesthetic interest in a garden setting. Carex cusickii is generally low-maintenance but can spread vigorously in ideal conditions, which should be considered when planting in smaller spaces or near garden borders.CC BY-SA 4.0
