Summary
Carex dolichostachya, commonly known as Gold Fountains Sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to moist, shaded environments such as forest floors, stream banks, and wet meadows in eastern Asia, including central and southeast China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, the Ryukyu Islands, and Japan. This sedge typically forms dense clumps reaching 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 centimeters) in height and width, with arching, slender leaves that create a fountain-like appearance. The foliage is a vibrant green, often with a golden hue that is particularly striking in the popular cultivar ’Kaga-nishiki’. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer, with subtle, grass-like flowers that are not particularly showy but add to the plant’s texture.
Gold Fountains Sedge is valued for its graceful form and the bright, golden-toned foliage of the ’Kaga-nishiki’ cultivar. It is often used in garden design for ground cover, as an accent plant in shaded borders, or around water features where its moisture requirements can be naturally met. It prefers consistently moist soils, but well-drained conditions are essential to prevent root rot. Partial to full shade is ideal for this sedge, as too much sun can scorch the leaves. While generally low-maintenance, it may require division every few years to rejuvenate and prevent overcrowding.CC BY-SA 4.0
