Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex michauxiana, commonly known as Michaux’s sedge or yellowish sedge, is a tussock-forming perennial herb native to a variety of wetland habitats including marshes, fens, wet meadows, and along the edges of ponds and streams in eastern North America and parts of Asia. It is particularly adapted to calcareous wetlands with neutral to basic pH soils. In North America, its range extends from Saskatchewan to Newfoundland, and in Asia, it is found in far eastern Russia, Japan, and northeastern China. This sedge typically grows 6 to 28 inches tall, with smooth, triangular cross-section culms. The foliage is yellowish to green, with leaves emerging from a thin outgrowth at the junction of the leafstalk, contributing to its distinctive appearance.
Michaux’s sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in rain gardens, wetland restoration projects, and as a component of naturalized plantings in moist areas of the landscape. It provides habitat and food for wildlife, particularly for birds that use the seeds as a food source. Carex michauxiana prefers consistently moist to wet soils and can tolerate partial shade to full sun. It is generally low-maintenance but may require management in garden settings to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
