Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex microptera, commonly known as Smallwing Sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a variety of moist habitats in western North America, including montane meadows, wetlands, and along streams and rivers from low to subalpine elevations. It is commonly found in the western United States and western Canada. Smallwing Sedge typically grows in dense clumps reaching over 8 inches to about 3 feet (1 meter) in height. The plant features narrow, grass-like leaves and an inflorescence consisting of a dense cluster of green or brown spikes, which are less showy than many ornamental flowers but add texture to the garden.
Smallwing Sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in rain gardens, bioswales, and as a part of naturalistic plantings in moist areas. It provides erosion control on riverbanks and slopes. This sedge prefers consistently moist soil and partial to full shade, making it suitable for challenging wet garden spots where other plants might struggle. While generally low-maintenance, it can spread in favorable conditions and may require management to keep it in bounds.CC BY-SA 4.0
