Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex parviflora, commonly known as small-flowered sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the sedge family. It is native to moist meadows, marshes, and the edges of deciduous forests in central and southern Europe. Small-flowered sedge typically grows to a height of 10-60 cm, with narrow, grass-like leaves. The plant produces inconspicuous, small greenish-brown flowers in late spring to early summer. The flowers are arranged in spikes, with male flowers at the top and female flowers below, a characteristic feature of sedges.
Carex parviflora is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in rain gardens, bog gardens, and other areas with moist soil. It is also suitable for naturalistic plantings and as a ground cover in shaded areas. This sedge prefers partial to full shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. It is relatively low maintenance, but may require division every few years to maintain vigor. While not known for serious disease or pest problems, sedges can be susceptible to rust and rot in overly wet conditions. Carex parviflora is not typically invasive but can spread in ideal growing conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
