Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex phaeocephala, commonly known as dunhead sedge, is a perennial herb native to alpine and subalpine zones in western North America, ranging from Alaska through California to New Mexico. It thrives in rocky, well-drained soils found in its high elevation habitats. This sedge typically forms dense clumps of stems that can reach up to 18 inches in height. The inflorescence is characterized by several spikes of flowers, each with greenish or brown-orange scales, and the perigynium that covers the fruit is notable for its dark center and greenish margins. The flowering season occurs in late spring to early summer, and while the flowers are not particularly showy, they add a subtle texture to the landscape.
Dunhead sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in challenging mountainous conditions, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens and restoration projects in similar environments. It is also used in native plant gardens and as a ground cover in appropriate climates. In cultivation, Carex phaeocephala requires minimal maintenance, needing only occasional watering once established, and it prefers full sun to part shade. It is not known for having significant disease problems or aggressive roots, but its preference for cooler, high elevation climates should be considered when planting in lower altitude or warmer areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
