Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex platyphylla, commonly known as broadleaf sedge or silver sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to rich, mesic deciduous forests and the understory of eastern North America, including southeast Canada and the north-central and eastern United States. It often coexists with Carex plantaginea but is more adaptable to a range of moisture conditions, from moist to dry sites. Broadleaf sedge typically forms dense clumps reaching 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) in height and width, with broad, silvery-green leaves that provide a striking textural contrast in the garden.
Silver sedge is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its foliage and its ability to form a dense, weed-suppressing ground cover. It is deer-resistant, making it a desirable choice for areas with high deer populations. This sedge is suitable for shade gardens, woodland plantings, and naturalized areas. It requires minimal maintenance once established and is drought-tolerant, though it prefers a well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It thrives in partial to full shade conditions. While generally disease-free, it can suffer from crown rot if planted in overly wet or poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
