Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex sempervirens, commonly known as Evergreen Sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to alpine and subalpine zones in the mountains of Europe, including the Alps, Pyrenees, and Carpathians. It thrives in nutrient-poor, well-drained soils often found in grasslands and rocky areas above and below the treeline. Evergreen Sedge forms dense, tussock-like clumps reaching 10-20 cm in height, with stiff, dark green leaves that remain vibrant throughout the year.
This sedge is valued for its low maintenance and year-round foliage interest, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine collections, and as ground cover in challenging garden spots. It is also used for erosion control on slopes due to its dense root system. In cultivation, Carex sempervirens prefers full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil, tolerating a range of soil types, including poor soils. While it is drought-tolerant once established, consistent moisture will keep it looking its best. There are no major disease or pest problems associated with this plant, but it can be sensitive to excessive moisture and poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
