Estimated Native Range
Summary
Carex senta, commonly known as Swamp Sedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to wetland habitats including marshes, wet meadows, and riparian zones along streams and rivers in western North America. It forms dense clumps and can reach up to 2 feet in height. Swamp Sedge has narrow, grass-like leaves and produces brownish-green flower spikes in late spring to early summer. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they do provide ecological benefits to wetland environments.
Swamp Sedge is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and prevent erosion in wetland areas. It is often used in restoration projects and naturalized plantings where its robust root system can help maintain the integrity of streambanks and wetland margins. In cultivation, it requires consistently moist to wet soil conditions and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is not typically grown for ornamental purposes, it can be an effective ground cover in appropriate wetland garden settings. Care should be taken when planting Swamp Sedge as it can spread vigorously and may become invasive in some conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
