Summary

Carex tuckermanii, commonly known as Tuckerman’s Sedge, is a semi-deciduous perennial grass native to wet meadows, marshes, fens, and along streambanks in the Northeastern USA and Eastern Canada. It typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and can spread to form colonies 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) wide. The plant features arching, grass-like leaves and brownish flower spikes that appear in late spring to early summer. While the flowers are not particularly showy, they add a fine-textured element to the landscape.

Tuckerman’s Sedge is valued for its ability to thrive in wet conditions and is often used in rain gardens, wetland restoration, and as a streambank stabilizer due to its dense root system. It is also suitable for naturalistic plantings and as a ground cover in shady areas. This sedge prefers consistently moist to wet soils and can tolerate standing water, making it ideal for challenging wet sites. It is adaptable to part shade but can also grow in full sun if sufficient moisture is present. Tuckerman’s Sedge is low maintenance and typically free from serious pests and diseases. However, it can spread vigorously by rhizomes, which should be considered when planting in smaller areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
