Summary

Cassia ×sturtii, commonly known as Sturt’s Cassia, is an evergreen shrub native to the arid inland regions of Central and Western Australia. It typically grows to a height of 2-9 feet (0.6-2.7 meters) and a width of 3-15 feet (0.9-4.6 meters). Sturt’s Cassia has a rounded form with pinnate leaves that are silvery-green in color. It produces vibrant yellow flowers that are quite showy during the winter and spring months, adding a splash of color to the garden when few other plants are in bloom.

Sturt’s Cassia is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in hot, dry climates, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens and xeriscaping. It is often used in cultivation for mass plantings, as a feature shrub in rockeries, and for erosion control on slopes. This plant prefers full sun exposure and requires well-drained soils. While it is low-maintenance, it may be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Sturt’s Cassia is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, making it a relatively trouble-free addition to the landscape. It is also a host plant for butterfly larvae, providing an ecological benefit.CC BY-SA 4.0
