Summary
Cassia grandis, commonly known as the Pink Shower Tree, is a deciduous tree native to tropical rainforests and seasonally dry forests in Central and South America, from southern Mexico to Venezuela and Ecuador. It can grow up to 98 feet tall, with a dense, spreading canopy that provides significant shade. The Pink Shower Tree is characterized by its large, pinnate leaves and striking, pendulous racemes of fragrant, pink to rose-colored flowers that bloom in the spring. The flowers are followed by long, cylindrical, dark brown seed pods. The bark is smooth and gray, providing a striking contrast to the foliage.
In cultivation, Cassia grandis is valued for its spectacular floral display and as a shade tree in large landscapes. It is suitable for urban planting and as an ornamental in tropical and subtropical regions. This species prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in well-drained soils, though it is tolerant of a range of soil types. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to pests such as caterpillars and diseases like leaf spot. Gardeners should be aware of its potential invasiveness when grown outside its native range and check local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
