Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cassia javanica, commonly known as Java Cassia or Pink Shower, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree native to the rainforests and monsoon forests of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It typically reaches heights of 30-40 feet (9-12 meters) in cultivation, although it can grow taller in its natural habitat. The tree has a spreading canopy with pinnate leaves that provide dappled shade. From late spring to early summer, it produces striking clusters of fragrant, pink to crimson flowers that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Following the flowering season, long cylindrical dark brown pods appear, containing the seeds.
Java Cassia is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to grow quickly, providing shade and visual interest in tropical and subtropical gardens. It is used for urban planting, as a street tree, and in parks due to its tolerance of poor soils and air pollution. This species prefers full sun to partial shade, requires moderate water, and thrives in well-drained soils. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to pests such as cassia webworm. Gardeners should be cautious about its potential invasiveness outside its native range, as it can displace native vegetation and disrupt local ecosystems.CC BY-SA 4.0
