Estimated Native Range
Summary
Castanopsis sieboldii, commonly known as Itajii chinkapin, is an evergreen tree native to the warm-temperate and subtropical forests of eastern Asia, including regions of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. It often forms part of the canopy in broad-leaved evergreen forests, where it contributes to the complex ecology by offering habitat and food for various species. This tree typically grows to a height of up to 66 feet (20 meters) and is recognized by its smooth, gray bark and a dense, rounded crown. The broad, leathery leaves are dark green, glossy, and have a serrated margin, which adds to the tree’s visual interest.
The Itajii chinkapin is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its attractive foliage and the small, yellowish flowers that appear in spring. Although the flowers are not particularly showy, they are followed by distinctive brown, spiny fruits that add textural interest to the landscape. In cultivation, it is used for shade in parks and large gardens and can also serve as a street tree in urban areas. It prefers moist, well-drained soils, and while it can tolerate partial shade, it thrives best in full sun to part shade conditions. It is relatively low-maintenance once established but may require additional water during prolonged dry periods.CC BY-SA 4.0
