Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cayratia pedata, commonly known as Birdfoot Grape-Vine, is a perennial climbing vine native to a variety of habitats including tropical and subtropical forests, forest margins, and scrublands from India to China and Java. It can reach a height and spread of 15-25 feet (5-8 meters), with a twining growth habit that allows it to climb over other vegetation. The leaves are compound with a distinctive pedate (foot-like) arrangement, and the small, inconspicuous flowers are greenish-white, typically blooming in the summer. Although the flowers are not showy, they give way to clusters of edible, dark purple to black berries.
Birdfoot Grape-Vine is valued for its ability to cover trellises and arbors quickly, providing dense foliage and shade. It is also used for its edible fruit and as a traditional medicinal plant in its native range. In cultivation, it requires moderate watering, well-drained soil, and can thrive in full sun to part shade conditions. While it is not commonly available in the horticultural trade, it can be a unique addition to tropical and subtropical gardens. Care should be taken as it can become invasive outside its native range, potentially outcompeting local flora.CC BY-SA 4.0
