Ceanothus griseus, commonly known as Carmel Ceanothus, is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal chaparral and mixed evergreen forests of California. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), making it a compact choice for garden spaces. This species is particularly noted for its dense, dark green foliage and profuse clusters of powder blue to deep blue flowers that bloom in the spring, adding a splash of color to the landscape. The flowers are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Carmel Ceanothus is valued for its drought tolerance once established, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens and native plant landscapes. It is often used for slope stabilization, as a low hedge, or in mass plantings for a striking visual effect. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter inland areas. It prefers well-draining soils and requires little to no supplemental water after it is established. However, it is sensitive to frost and needs protection in colder climates.
