Estimated Native Range
Summary
Celmisia semicordata, commonly known as Mountain Daisy or Tikumu, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the South Island of New Zealand, where it thrives in subalpine and alpine zones, including tussock grasslands, rocky areas, and stable scree slopes. It typically grows to a height and width of 1.5-2 feet (0.46-0.6 meters), forming a dense clump of long, narrow, silvery-green leaves that are striking in appearance. The flowers are large, daisy-like with white petals and a yellow center, blooming in summer and are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Mountain Daisy is valued for its attractive foliage and flowers, which add texture and interest to rock gardens, alpine collections, and borders. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring minimal care once established. It prefers cool climates and can tolerate frost. While it enjoys full sun to part shade, it must be protected from the hot afternoon sun in warmer regions. The plant prefers well-drained soils, such as loam or sandy soils, and consistent moisture but is somewhat drought tolerant once established. It is not commonly affected by diseases but can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
