Summary
Ceraria namaquensis, commonly known as Namaqua porkbush or Namaqua portulacaria, is a succulent shrub native to arid regions and rocky outcrops in the border areas of South Africa and Namibia. It is a slow-growing plant that can reach heights of 1.3 to 1.8 meters. The shrub is characterized by its small, ovoid, club-shaped leaves that are deciduous and densely coat the upward-growing, stout, forking stems. The leaves are adapted to store water, making the plant well-suited to its dry native habitat. Ceraria namaquensis produces inconspicuous unisexual flowers that are pink in color and bloom in the spring, although the flowers are not particularly showy.
In cultivation, Namaqua porkbush is valued for its unique sculptural form and its ability to thrive in arid conditions with minimal care, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and rock gardens. It is also used as a container plant or as an accent in succulent collections. This species prefers full sun exposure and requires low to medium amounts of water, with well-draining soil being essential to prevent root rot. While it is generally free of serious pests and diseases, overwatering can lead to problems such as fungal infections.CC BY-SA 4.0
