Summary

Cerastium biebersteinii, commonly known as Boreal Chickweed, is a perennial herb that is native to the steppes and rocky slopes of Crimea and the surrounding Black Sea region. It typically grows to a height of 15–25 centimeters with a similar spread. The plant has a dense, mat-forming habit with stems that are covered in fine, white, woolly hairs, giving it a silvery appearance. The leaves are also whitish and tomentose, flat or linear prolonged, a bit acute, and smooth-edged, measuring 0.2–3 centimeters long and 1–9 millimeters wide. The white flowers are showy, 1.5–2.2 centimeters in diameter, and are borne in cymes at the top of the sprouts. The blooming period is from late April to the end of May, offering a brief but attractive display.

Boreal Chickweed is valued for its ground-covering abilities and its silvery foliage, which can provide a contrasting texture and color in rock gardens, borders, and alpine gardens. It is also used to stabilize slopes and prevent erosion. This plant is drought-tolerant once established and prefers full sun exposure, requiring medium amounts of water and well-drained soils. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
