Summary
Cerastium candidissimum, commonly known as Snow-in-Summer or Silver Carpet, is a semi-deciduous perennial herb that originates from the rocky and gravelly alpine regions of Southern Europe. It typically grows to a height of 0.3-0.5 feet (0.09-0.15 meters) and spreads 1-1.5 feet (0.3-0.45 meters) wide. This plant is characterized by its dense, mat-forming habit and silver-gray foliage that provides a striking contrast in the garden. The white, star-shaped flowers are showy and bloom profusely in late spring to early summer, creating a snow-like effect.
Snow-in-Summer is valued for its ground-covering ability, drought tolerance, and the bright splash of color it brings to rock gardens, borders, and slopes. It is also used to fill gaps between stepping stones and in xeriscaping. This plant thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil, preferably sandy or loamy, but it can tolerate clay if drainage is adequate. It is generally low-maintenance but can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained conditions. Deadheading after flowering can encourage a second bloom and prevent self-seeding, which can lead to invasiveness in some areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
