Summary

Cercis chinensis, commonly known as Chinese redbud, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to woodlands and forest margins in China. It can grow up to 49 feet (15 meters) tall, though it is often smaller in cultivation. The species is characterized by its rounded, heart-shaped leaves and a profusion of pink to milky white flowers that appear before the leaves in April, creating a striking display. The flowers are followed by flattened, bean-like seed pods that mature in October. Chinese redbud is notable for its ornamental value, particularly its spring floral display.

In cultivation, Chinese redbud is valued for its early spring flowers and attractive foliage. It is suitable for use in sheltered borders, as a specimen plant, or in woodland gardens. It thrives in damp, well-drained soil and prefers a position with full sun to partial shade. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to canker diseases and may require protection from harsh winds. The Royal Horticultural Society has recognized its horticultural merit with an Award of Garden Merit.CC BY-SA 4.0
