Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cercocarpus betuloides, commonly known as Birchleaf Mountain Mahogany, is a semi-evergreen to deciduous shrub or small tree native to the chaparral and forest margins of the Southwestern USA and Northwest Mexico. It is often found in association with other species such as Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia). Birchleaf Mountain Mahogany typically grows to a height of 4-20 feet (1.2-6.1 meters) and a width of 4-8 feet (1.2-2.4 meters), with a rounded to irregular form. It produces small, cream-colored flowers in the spring and sometimes again in winter, which are not particularly showy but are attractive to pollinators. The plant is also noted for its interesting, shredding bark and hard, reddish-brown wood.
Birchleaf Mountain Mahogany is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens and naturalistic landscapes. It is used for erosion control, as a screen or hedge, and in restoration projects. This species prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, and it requires well-drained soils. While it is low-maintenance and requires little water once established, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. There are no major disease or pest issues, but it is important to avoid overwatering.CC BY-SA 4.0
