Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cestrum aurantiacum, commonly known as Orange Jessamine or Yellow Cestrum, is a semi-evergreen shrub native to the subtropical and tropical regions of Central and South America. It typically grows to a height of 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) and a similar width. This plant is characterized by its tubular, fragrant flowers that are orange to yellow in color, blooming in waves throughout the warmer months. The flowers are especially showy at night, attracting pollinators such as moths. Its foliage is a glossy green, and the plant may produce inedible berries.
Orange Jessamine is appreciated for its sweet-smelling flowers and is often used in ornamental plantings, hedges, and as a privacy screen. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to pests such as whiteflies and spider mites. In areas where it is not invasive, it can be a delightful addition to a night garden or near outdoor seating areas for its evening fragrance. However, caution is advised as all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, and it should not be planted where small children or pets might consume it.CC BY-SA 4.0
