Summary
Chaerophyllum hirsutum, commonly known as Hairy Chervil, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the woodland edges, meadows, and grasslands of Central and Southeastern Europe. It can grow up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall and resembles cow parsley with its apple-scented, ferny foliage. Hairy Chervil produces umbels of white flowers that bloom in May and June, which are moderately showy and attract pollinators. The cultivar ’Roseum’ is notable for its pale pink flowers and is widely cultivated for its ornamental value.
Hairy Chervil is appreciated for its aromatic foliage and delicate flowers, which can add a light, airy texture to garden borders and cottage gardens. It is also used in wildflower meadows where its height can provide structure. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and requires medium to high amounts of water, thriving in soils with medium drainage. While generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and root rot if conditions are too damp. Hairy Chervil is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, but care should be taken to avoid overly wet conditions to prevent root issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
