Summary

Chamaecytisus purpureus, commonly known as Purple Broom, is a deciduous shrub native to the mountainous regions of the southern and southeastern Alps and the Dinaric Alps down to northern Albania. It typically grows to a height of 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters) and a similar width. Purple Broom thrives in open woodlands and rocky slopes in its native habitat, where it contributes to the biodiversity of alpine ecosystems.

The plant is characterized by its dense, twiggy form and small, trifoliate leaves. From late spring to early summer, it produces vibrant purple to magenta flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators. The flowers are showy and create a striking contrast against the green foliage. After flowering, the plant may produce small, brown leguminous fruits. Purple Broom is valued for its bright floral display and its ability to adapt to poor soils and harsh conditions. It is often used in rock gardens, as a border plant, or for naturalizing in wild areas. In cultivation, it prefers well-drained soils, tolerates drought once established, and requires full sun to part shade. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases in humid conditions. Pruning after flowering can help maintain its shape and promote vigorous growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
