Estimated Native Range
Summary
Chamaemespilus alpina, commonly known as Alpine Whitebeam, is a deciduous shrub native to the mountainous regions of Europe. It typically grows to a height of 10-15 feet (3-4.6 meters) and a width of 14-18 feet (4-5 meters), with a dense, rounded form. The leaves are broadly oval, finely toothed, and have a soft, downy underside. In spring, Alpine Whitebeam produces clusters of white flowers that are modestly showy, followed by small, round, red or orange berries in the fall, which are attractive to birds.
Alpine Whitebeam is valued for its hardiness and adaptability to various soil conditions, though it prefers well-drained, lime-rich soils. It is often used in gardens and parks for its ornamental foliage and fruit, and as a windbreak or screen in exposed locations. It can tolerate partial shade but flowers best in full sun. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to fireblight and aphids. This shrub is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, making it a reliable choice for cultivation.CC BY-SA 4.0
