Charpentiera ovata, commonly known as Koolau Range Papala, Pāpala, or Oval-leaf charpentiera, is a perennial shrub or small tree endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, specifically thriving in the moist and wet forests as well as the shrublands of the Ko’olau Range. It exhibits a slow growth rate and can reach a height of 6-20 feet (1.8-6 meters) with a similar spread. Charpentiera ovata is characterized by its oval to lance-shaped leaves and its inflorescences of small, inconspicuous yellow or green flowers that bloom in the spring and summer. The plant’s non-showy flowers are followed by small, round, dark fruits that are eaten by native birds.

Koolau Range Papala is valued for its cultural significance in Hawaii and its use in native plant restoration projects. It is also appreciated for its lush foliage and adaptability to wet environments. In cultivation, it is suitable for naturalistic plantings and as an understory plant in shaded gardens. It requires part shade to full shade, consistent moisture, and well-draining soils rich in organic matter, such as clay or loam.
