Estimated Native Range
Summary
Chasmanthium laxum, commonly known as Slender Woodoats, is a deciduous perennial grass native to open woodlands, forest edges, and along streams in the Southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). This grass is noted for its distinctive, drooping seed heads that resemble flattened oats, which turn a golden brown in late summer and persist into winter, providing visual interest. The foliage is a bright green that also turns golden brown in the fall.
Slender Woodoats is valued for its adaptability to various light conditions, making it suitable for full sun to part shade locations. It is drought-tolerant once established, which, combined with its ability to grow in a range of soil types, from well-drained to moist, makes it an easy plant to maintain. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, as a border accent, or for erosion control on slopes. While generally pest and disease-free, it can self-seed prolifically, which may be unwanted in some garden settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
