Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cherleria obtusiloba, commonly known as Alpine Stitchwort, is an evergreen perennial subshrub or herb that thrives in the alpine and subalpine zones, as well as in tundra-like environments. Its native range extends across the high mountain regions of the Intermountain USA, Western Canada, and Alaska. This low-growing plant typically reaches a height of 0.2-0.4 feet (0.06-0.1 meters) and spreads 0.3-0.5 feet (0.09-0.2 meters), forming dense mats that can serve as ground cover. Alpine Stitchwort is characterized by its succulent, oblong leaves and small, star-shaped white flowers that bloom in summer, adding a delicate touch to rock gardens and alpine displays.
Alpine Stitchwort is valued for its hardiness and ability to thrive in harsh, rocky conditions with minimal water requirements. It is often used in rock gardens, as ground cover, or in crevices of stone walls where other plants might struggle to survive. Gardeners appreciate its low maintenance and the contrast its evergreen foliage provides against the barren alpine landscape. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade and requires well-drained soils to prevent root rot. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
