Estimated Native Range
Summary
Choisya arizonica, commonly known as Arizona Mock Orange or Arizona Star Leaf, is an evergreen shrub native to the chaparral and pine-oak woodlands of the southwestern United States, particularly Arizona and New Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 3-9 feet (0.9-2.7 meters) and a width of 4-8 feet (1.2-2.4 meters), with a dense, rounded form. The plant is adorned with glossy, aromatic, compound leaves that are divided into three leaflets, resembling the shape of a star, hence the common name. From late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped white flowers that are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.
Arizona Mock Orange is valued for its fragrant flowers and its ability to thrive in dry, challenging conditions, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens and xeriscaping. It is often used in residential landscapes for border planting, as a specimen, or for creating informal hedges. This shrub prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy. While it does best in part shade, especially in hot climates, it can also adapt to full sun with adequate moisture. It is relatively low-maintenance, but occasional pruning can help maintain its shape and promote denser foliage.CC BY-SA 4.0
