Estimated Native Range
Summary
Chorizanthe staticoides, commonly known as Turkish Rugging, is an annual herb that is native to California, found in coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats. It exhibits a variable morphology, sometimes forming small mats on the ground or growing erect to over half a meter in height. The leaves, primarily basal, range from a few millimeters to about 8 centimeters long and are attached to a fuzzy green or reddish stem. The stem tops branch into flat-topped inflorescences densely packed with tiny flowers. Each flower is subtended by a cylindrical involucre of six sharp-tipped bracts, which can be red, purple, or green. The actual flowers are pink to red, a few millimeters wide, and contain nine stamens, blooming from late spring to early summer.
Turkish Rugging is appreciated for its unique bract coloration and is used in rock gardens, native plant gardens, and as a ground cover in xeriscaping due to its low water needs. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. While it is drought-tolerant, it can benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. There are no widely known cultivars of this species, and it is generally pest and disease-free. However, it may be short-lived and can reseed under optimal conditions. Gardeners should be aware that it may not perform well in heavy, poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
