Summary

Chorizema nervosum, commonly known as Heart-leaf Flame Pea, is an evergreen shrub endemic to the coastal heathlands and forest margins of southern Western Australia. It typically grows to a height of 8 to 31.5 inches (20 to 80 centimeters) and features an erect or spreading habit. The leaves are distinctive, being sharply-pointed, wavy, round to heart-shaped, and the shrub produces striking yellowish-orange and red pea flowers that are quite showy, blooming from late winter to early spring (July to September in the Southern Hemisphere).

Heart-leaf Flame Pea is valued for its vibrant flowers and compact size, making it an excellent choice for ornamental use in rockeries, native gardens, and as a container plant. It thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils, prefers a position with full sun to part shade, and requires moderate watering, particularly during dry periods. While it is not commonly affected by diseases, it can be sensitive to Phytophthora root rot if drainage is poor. Gardeners should note that it may require some protection from frost in cooler climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
