Estimated Native Range
Summary
Chrysogonum virginianum, commonly known as Green and Gold or Goldenstar, is a perennial herb native to the woodland floors, forest edges, and moist meadows of the eastern United States, from New York to Florida and west to Louisiana. It typically grows 6 to 12 inches tall with a similar spread, forming a low, spreading mat. This plant is characterized by its bright yellow, star-shaped flowers and semi-evergreen, heart-shaped leaves. The flowers, which bloom profusely in spring and continue sporadically throughout summer, are particularly showy and attract a variety of pollinators.
Goldenstar is valued for its ease of maintenance, tolerance of a range of soil conditions, and the cheerful yellow flowers that can brighten up shady areas in the garden. It is commonly used as a ground cover, in woodland gardens, and for naturalizing in informal borders. While it prefers moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter, it is relatively drought-tolerant once established. It thrives in partial to full shade but can tolerate morning sun with adequate moisture. Goldenstar can be propagated by division in spring or fall and is generally free of serious pests and diseases. However, it can spread aggressively in optimal conditions, so gardeners may need to manage its growth to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
