Estimated Native Range
Summary
Chrysolepis sempervirens, commonly known as Bush Chinquapin, is an evergreen shrub native to the chaparral and mixed evergreen forests of California and the Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon. It typically grows to a height of 7-9 feet (2.1-2.7 meters) and a width of 12-15 feet (3.7-4.6 meters), featuring a dense, rounded form. The leaves are glossy green, leathery, and have a spiny-toothed margin, which adds texture to the plant’s appearance. During the late summer, it produces small, inconspicuous yellow flowers, followed by spiny fruits that contain edible nuts, which are a food source for wildlife.
Bush Chinquapin is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. It is also used for erosion control on slopes and in fire-resistant landscaping due to its low flammability. This shrub requires minimal maintenance once established and is suitable for growing in full sun to partial shade. It is important to note that the Bush Chinquapin does not tolerate overwatering or poorly drained soils. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot if conditions are too wet.CC BY-SA 4.0
