Estimated Native Range
Summary
Chrysosplenium macrophyllum, commonly known as Giant Golden Saxifrage, is a perennial herb that is typically evergreen but may be semi-deciduous depending on the climate. It is native to the damp forest floors and stream banks in the mountainous regions of Central and Southeastern China. This plant usually reaches a height of 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) and spreads 6-8 inches (15-20 cm), forming a low, dense mat. The foliage is rounded, with a lush green color that provides a textural contrast in garden settings. In spring, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that are usually greenish-yellow, with a subtle charm rather than showiness.
Giant Golden Saxifrage is valued for its ability to thrive in moist, shady conditions where other plants might struggle. It is an excellent ground cover for damp, shaded areas and is often used in woodland gardens, along stream banks, or in shaded rock gardens. It requires consistently moist soil and does not tolerate drought well. Gardeners should provide full to part shade and plant it in a location with cool, humus-rich, and well-draining soil. While it is generally pest-free, it can suffer from root rot if the soil is too wet.CC BY-SA 4.0
