Estimated Native Range
Summary
Cibotium glaucum, commonly known as Hawaiian Tree Fern, is an evergreen fern native to the moist, shaded understory of Hawaiian tropical rainforests. It can reach a height of 8 feet (2.4 meters) and a width of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters), with a distinctive appearance characterized by its large, arching fronds and a thick, woolly trunk. The fronds are a soft green with a glaucous, or bluish, tinge that can add a unique texture to garden settings. This species does not produce flowers or seeds, as it reproduces via spores that are found on the undersides of the fronds.
The Hawaiian Tree Fern is valued for its lush, tropical appearance and is often used in shaded garden areas, as an accent plant, or in containers. It requires consistent moisture and high humidity, making it suitable for a woodland garden or a fernery. It thrives in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. While it prefers part shade, it can tolerate more sunlight if kept adequately moist. It is relatively low maintenance but may require protection from strong winds and cold temperatures. Hawaiian Tree Ferns are slow-growing and can be sensitive to over-fertilization.CC BY-SA 4.0
