Summary
Cissus quadrangularis, commonly known as Veldt Grape or Devil’s Backbone, is a perennial climber native to the hot, dry regions ofvthe Arabian Peninsula, Africa, tropical Asia, particularly in places like India and Sri Lanka. It thrives in a variety of habitats, including dry forest areas and thickets. This plant can grow up to 5 feet tall and has distinctive quadrangular (four-sided) stems that are green to yellowish-green. The leaves are simple, broadly ovate, and can be toothed or lobed. Small, greenish-white flowers may appear throughout the year, followed by small, red to purple berries.
Veldt Grape is known for its medicinal properties, particularly in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, and is used to treat a variety of ailments. It is also grown as an ornamental plant for its unique geometric stem structure and is suitable for hanging baskets or as a climbing vine with support. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade, well-draining soil, and moderate watering, with reduced watering in the winter. It is relatively easy to maintain and can be propagated from stem cuttings. However, it is potentially invasive in some regions, so gardeners should check local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
