Summary

Cissus striata, commonly known as the Chilean Clematis, is an evergreen perennial vine native to the temperate rainforests and sclerophyllous shrublands of Southern South America, particularly in Chile and Argentina. It can grow to a height of 4-12 feet (1.2-3.7 meters) and a width of up to 3 feet (0.9 meters). This vine is characterized by its twining stems and small, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers that bloom in spring and summer. The foliage is dark green and leathery, providing year-round interest.

The Chilean Clematis is valued for its ability to cover structures quickly, making it an excellent choice for trellises, arbors, and fences. It is also used for ground cover in large areas where maintenance is minimal. This vine is relatively low-maintenance, tolerating a range of light conditions from full sun to full shade. It prefers soils with medium drainage and can adapt to low or medium water availability. While it is not known for significant pest or disease issues, it can sometimes be affected by clematis wilt or aphids. Gardeners should be aware that it may require occasional pruning to maintain shape and promote vigorous growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
