Summary
Cistanthe grandiflora, commonly known as Rock Purslane, is an evergreen succulent plant native to the arid coastal scrub and rocky outcrops of Central Chile. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and spreads to about 2 feet (0.6 meters) wide. Rock Purslane has a clumping habit with fleshy, gray-green leaves that provide a textural contrast in the garden. It produces vibrant, showy magenta-purple flowers with yellow centers that bloom profusely in the spring and fall, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Rock Purslane is valued for its drought tolerance and striking floral display, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens, rockeries, and coastal landscapes. It is also suitable for container planting due to its compact size. While it thrives in full sun, it can tolerate part shade, especially in hotter climates. This succulent prefers well-draining soil and requires minimal watering once established, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. It is not known for having significant disease or pest problems, but overwatering can lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
